Lara Trump to Step Down as RNC Co-Chair Amid Speculation About Senate Vacancy
Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, has announced her intention to step down as co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) amid speculation that she could be tapped to fill an upcoming Senate vacancy in Florida.
The move comes after Sen. Marco Rubio was nominated for secretary of state in Trump’s incoming administration. If confirmed, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis would need to choose a successor to serve out the rest of Rubio’s term, which expires in 2026.
Lara Trump said in a post on X that “the job I came to do is now complete and I intend to formally step down from the RNC at our next meeting.” She also expressed her willingness to consider filling the Senate vacancy, stating that “it is something I would seriously consider” and that she would “100% consider it” if the opportunity arose.
Lara Trump has been serving as co-chair of the RNC since 2020 and has been a prominent figure in the Republican Party. Her decision to step down from the RNC comes as a surprise, but it is unclear what her next move will be.
