This year’s list of winners and losers may not be entirely palatable to Hollywood’s progressive community, but here it is nonetheless. Featuring a host of talented actresses, bold creatives who took significant risks, and even aliens, this roundup is packed with surprises and controversies. Amidst a year that included Donald Trump’s re-election, some of our biggest stars saw their influence ebb and flow in surprising ways.
Winners
* Zendaya, along with fellow former Disney/Nickelodeon stars Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez, found themselves in contention for Oscar nominations thanks to their roles in Wicked and Emilia Pérez, respectively. The comeback of Lindsay Lohan, who starred in the Netflix Christmas comedy Our Little Secret and the upcoming Freaky Friday sequel, also made an impact.
* Joe Rogan proved to be a kingmaker of sorts this election cycle, with his three-hour interview with Trump earning Apple’s top spot on the year-end charts.
* Chappell Roan’s hot streak saw her releasing an emotional EP and debuting her EPIC on social media platforms.
L Losers
* Kevin Costner’s projects, such as Horizon: An American Saga, tanked commercially despite the high expectations generated by his association with Yellowstones.
* Francis Ford Coppola, who had taken a major risk in releasing his magnum opus, Megalopolis, faced a disaster in terms of box office revenue, garnering just $12 million globally.
Musical Movies
Despite mixed results in the rest of the year, movies musicals reigned supreme. Wicked, one love, and Moana 2 achieved significant box office success, while films like Mean Girls and Our Lady of Fire also proved that there was still interest in this genre.
