As the sun beat down on the steps of the Supreme Court in Washington D.C., three transgender children, all under the age of 18, stood alongside their families, holding handmade signs reading “Protect our rights” and “Equality now.”

Among them was 13-year-old Jaxson, who has been receiving gender-affirming care for over a year. “I’m feeling scared, nervous, and a little anxious,” Jaxson said, looking up at the towering court building. “But also determined, because we know that our voices matter and we deserve to be seen.”

The young girl, who would only share her first name, Olivia, said she felt a sense of solidarity with the other children here today. “We’re all in this together,” she said, “and we need to stick together to make sure our lives are valued and respected.”

Their trip was made more challenging by the announcement by the Biden administration that it would forgive the student loan debts of some U.S. borrowers, but the panel’s president, Mark E Buckley, said the move would not impact the livelihoods of people who work in schools.
