John Dean Urges President Biden to Expand Pardon List to Thwart Trump’s Potential Revenge
CNN contributor and Watergate figure John Dean is advising President Biden to expand his pardon list to prevent President-elect Donald Trump from exacting revenge on his political enemies.
Dean, who served as White House counsel to President Nixon during the Watergate scandal, suggested that Biden issue a “blanket pardon” for DOJ officials who investigated or prosecuted Trump, as well as for those on Trump’s “enemies list” who made political statements before December 25, 2024.
Dean’s advice comes after Biden announced that he pardoned his son, Hunter, who was facing potentially significant prison time for federal tax evasion and gun convictions. The president criticized the investigation and prosecution of his son, calling it “infected” by politics and leading to a “miscarriage of justice.”
Dean, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, argues that pardoning Trump’s enemies could be a way to “take the wind out of retribution/revenge!” He notes that Trump has previously spoken about seeking revenge on those who investigated and prosecuted him during his presidency.
Biden’s pardon of Hunter has been met with criticism from some who argue that it goes against the president’s previous rhetoric on executive power and the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions.
