A Disgraced Former Kansas Police Detective Found Dead Before Trial for Kidnapping and Rape Charges

A disgraced former Kansas police detective, Roger Golubski, 71, was found dead in his home on Monday morning, just before he was scheduled to stand trial on charges of kidnapping and rape. Golubski’s death was determined to be a suicide, although authorities have not released any further information about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Golubski was accused of using his position as a police officer in Kansas City, Kansas, to sexually assault vulnerable Black women over the course of decades. He was arrested in 2022 and faced a series of serious charges, including kidnapping, rape, and sex trafficking.

Golubski’s lead defense attorney, Chris Joseph, said that his client had maintained his innocence and that his death should not be considered an admission of guilt. Golubski’s alleged victims had accused him of targeting them because he believed they would never be believed.

The allegations against Golubski were the subject of a lengthy investigation by the FBI, and prosecutors said that the credibility of his accusers would be central to the case. However, prosecutors acknowledged that they had limited evidence beyond the testimony of Golubski’s alleged victims.

Golubski’s death has been met with statements of dismay from his alleged victims, as well as from law enforcement officials. Cheryl Pilate, the civil attorney for the McIntyres, called for a thorough investigation into Golubski’s death by officials with no ties to local police, and said that the community was denied justice by his suicide.
