Angry Rudy Giuliani Lashes Out in Court Over $146 Million Defamation Judgment
Former personal lawyer to Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, lashed out in court on Tuesday, claiming he is having a hard time making ends meet due to the financial strain of complying with a $146 million defamation judgment. Giuliani is required to turn over his assets to former Georgia election workers, Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss, who he defamed while challenging the 2020 election results in the state.
Giuliani complained that he has been unable to meet his financial obligations, stating that he has no car, credit card, or cash, and that his business accounts have been frozen. He also claimed that he is unable to apply for a new title for one of the assets he has turned over, a 1980 Mercedes-Benz SL 500, which was previously owned by Hollywood icon Lauren Bacall.
U.S. District Judge Lewis Liman appeared skeptical of Giuliani’s claims, warning him against making further outbursts and stating that he did not appear to be indigent. The judge also rejected Giuliani’s request to delay a trial scheduled for January 16, which is related to outstanding issues in the case, including the surrender of his Florida home and four World Series rings.
Giuliani’s new attorney, Joseph Cammarata, said that he is appealing the judge’s turnover order and has been working to comply with the court’s orders. However, attorneys for Freeman and Moss have accused Giuliani of failing to comply with the orders and have requested that the court impose sanctions against him if he does not meet his obligations.
Giuliani’s outbursts in court were met with frustration from the judge, who expressed concern that the former New York City mayor was not taking the situation seriously. Giuliani’s behavior has raised eyebrows, as he was criticized for his repeated false accusations against Freeman and Moss, which led to a torrent of racist death threats and forced them to leave their jobs.
