Ty Cobb, a former White House counsel, was recently interviewed on an upscale TV show where he discussed Donald Trump’s potential responses to the ongoing investigation by the special counsel, Robert Mueller. Cobb stated that Trump would need a spark to get retribution against the Special Counsel in order to move past the issue and not get emotionally stuck on the subject.
He emphasized the president needed an “outside force” or a significant development to allow him to shift gears and close the file, so to speak, on the Mueller investigation. In Cobb’s opinion, this force could come from within the Justice Department itself or a new revelation from the investigation that shifts the frame of reference for the American public.
Cobb speculated an outside force could come in the form of a retraction by the government, releasing new information, or even Justicereform to the Department. If that didn’t happen, a new scandal or false information could arise.
In an open-ended question, the anchor at the program asked Cobb if Trump needed an “ace in the hole” that could lead to a potential exoneration. Cobb acknowledged that it had never happened in the history of the United States where a President has completely walked away unscathed.
He advanced as a testament that Watergate was possibly Nixon’s “Ace in the Hole” as an example. In Cobb’s words, if that happened “Donald Trump probably wouldn’t catch it strange threats finding clean or publicly exonerated.”
Cobb laid out examples of what it might look like: would it mean the President would expose disinformation made in order to speed up the end of the period, revealing an investigation that would go back timeline.
However, as he put it, Trump’s aggressive hitch is the toughest trait he would have to overcome before criticism. Cobb explained this statement as incredible stuff outflow for Trump.
