Legal Challenges Mar Trump Administration’s Turbulent First Year

Since taking office, President Donald Trump and his administration have faced numerous legal challenges over his agenda and policies. One of the most notable lawsuits was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) on behalf of organizations with members whose babies born on U.S. soil would be denied citizenship under Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship.

The order, signed on the day of his inauguration, aimed to end the right of citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, citing the 14th Amendment. However, legal experts argued that the right is enshrined in the Constitution and that the order is unconstitutional and against congressional intent and Supreme Court precedent.

Eighteen Democrat-led states launched their own lawsuit, claiming the order is unconstitutional and “unprecedented.” A U.S. district judge temporarily blocked the order, describing it as “blatantly unconstitutional.”

The Trump administration has also faced lawsuits over its mass deportation policy, with several Chicago sanctuary city groups filing a lawsuit claiming that the policy violates their First Amendment rights. The groups argued that the threat of ICE agents flooding into communities has already impacted Chicagoans and chilled their rights to freely exercise their religion and assemble.

In addition, six transgender military members filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that an executive order ending all federal diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs is unconstitutional and violates the Equal Protection component of the Fifth Amendment.

The administration has also faced legal challenges over its directive to freeze federal funding, with New York Attorney General Letitia James leading a coalition of 22 other attorneys general suing to stop the implementation of the memo. A federal judge imposed a stay on the directive, delaying its implementation until Monday.
