The Trump administration temporarily shut down most federal government websites on Friday evening in an effort to remove content opposed to President Trump’s agenda. The websites went dark at around 5:00 p.m. and were later restored. The move was intended to eliminate content deemed “anti-Trump administration” and against the president’s policy goals.
The action follows an order from the Office of Personnel Management requiring heads and directors of agencies and departments to close all offices focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by the end of the week. This comes after President Trump signed an executive order last week to eliminate all DEI programs from the federal government.
Additionally, the president signed a second executive order making it official policy for the U.S. government to recognize only two genders: male and female. He also issued an executive order to end discrimination in the workplace and higher education through race- and sex-based preferences, which was disguised as DEI. Furthermore, the president issued a memo to eliminate a Biden administration policy prioritizing DEI hiring at the Federal Aviation Administration.
