Devastating Figure Skating Community by Air Disaster for Third Time in Six Decades

A midair collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a Black Hawk military helicopter Wednesday night resulted in a catastrophic crash, leaving no survivors. According to the U.S. Figure Skating Association, several members of the skating community, including athletes, coaches, and family members, were aboard the plane and did not survive.

Among those lost in the tragedy are world champion and parents of a U.S. figure skater, Maxim Naumov. Maxim, a U.S. men’s figure skater who won fourth place at the national championships just Sunday, will survive his parents.

Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov were known for their joyful, tongue-in-cheek performances on the ice and had coached elite figure skaters before becoming trainers. Maxim and their parents, Jinna and Christine, will continue to play an active role in the Boston Skating Club and their coach Rafael Arutyunyan. “I can’t believe they don’t exist in this world anymore.” His team’s sadness reflects a growing understanding among parents in figure skating community as travel plans, family vacation schedules for skating family can bring potential threat on planes that their love may lose people dear as air.
