Clay Matthews, former Green Bay Packers legend, is not only a football player, but also a hunter. He was raised as a hunter and is now passing on that tradition to his three children, who are all under the age of 10. Matthews is one of four former NFL players nominated for the Colt’s Safety Impact Award, which aims to promote firearm safety and education.

Matthews has partnered with Project ChildSafe, a charity that provides free locks for firearms and safes to local law enforcement. He believes that education and safety are key, particularly for his children. “This was a natural fit to work with Colt to come together on something that means a great deal to me, to give back and promote this education of firearm safety,” Matthews said.

As a father, Matthews emphasizes the importance of teaching children about safety and responsibility when it comes to firearms. “I’m in charge of that,” he said. “My kids from a young age have been brought up around firearms, but they understand dad’s in charge. You don’t have free rein.”

Matthews also shares his own experiences as a child, saying his father taught him the importance of being responsible and careful around firearms. “When I got out there, there was a responsibility that I felt I had growing up in that environment, and hopefully my kids will have the same,” he said.

Matthews’ children are already showing interest in hunting and shooting, with his eldest son wanting to go deer hunting soon and his 5-year-old daughter wanting to sit in a blind for turkey hunting season this year. Matthews stresses the importance of locking up firearms at all times and teaching children to always keep safety in mind.

Fans can vote for their favorite player until Friday on the safetyimpactaward.com website. For every vote, Colt will donate $1 (up to $10,000) to the winner. Matthews encouraged fans to vote for him, saying, “This is a competition after all, so I’m asking you to vote for my charity.”
