Powerless, Democrats Debate Just How Deep in the Wilderness They Are

Ad

Democratic lawmakers, activists, and strategists are engaged in a fierce debate over the extent of the party’s damage after the 2024 election, an internal argument that is already shaping early efforts to rebuild.

The party is divided on how to interpret losses that returned President Trump to power and put Republicans in total control of the federal government. While there is no denialism like the Republicans experienced after Trump’s loss in 2020, the Democrats are sharply disagreed over how to fix their brand.

Some lawmakers and strategists are calling for a major overhaul, demanding deep changes and hard conversations to reverse the party’s erosion of support, especially among working-class voters. Others, however, are taking a more wait-and-see approach, hoping to harness a predicted backlash against Trump’s agenda to capture the House of Representatives in 2026.

The party’s message and difficulties in delivering that message are also being questioned. Some see the party’s losses as more situational than systemic, blaming the Biden administration’s age and unpopularity for the party’s decline.

However, others argue that the party’s decline is more profound, citing statistics showing the erosion of Democratic voter registration in key states, increased support for Republicans among certain groups, and a lack of identity for the party.

The debate is playing out in closed-door gatherings on Capitol Hill, retreats for donors and strategists, and the intramural campaign culminating in the election of the next leader of the Democratic National Committee. The divide does not fall neatly along ideological lines, with some moderate and progressive Democrats aligning in seeking a sharp course correction.

As the party looks to rebuild, different groups are holding retreats and gatherings to discuss the lessons learned from the 2024 election. However, not everyone is participating, with some Democrats pointing to the relatively slim margin of Trump’s popular vote victory and the party’s wins in some key Senate races.

Despite the divisions, the party recognizes the need to change and adapt. Some strategists are recommending a course of “reality therapy” for Democrats, warning of the dangers of ignoring problems and making excuses instead of facing up to them. Others are urging the party to focus exclusively on solutions rather than debating the extent of the problem.
