Starbucks Shakes Up Leadership, Brings in Two Taco Bell Alums

In a move to further transform the company, Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol has announced the addition of two new executives from his former employer, Taco Bell, to help implement his “Back to Starbucks” plan. The plan aims to return the company to its roots and improve customer experience by reducing service times, making stores more welcoming, and simplifying the menu.

As part of the shake-up, the company has split the role of North American president into two separate positions. Current North American president Sara Trilling will be leaving the company. Taking over the two new roles will be Meredith Sandland, who will become chief store development officer and Mike Grams, who will become North America chief stores officer. Both Sandland and Grams come from Taco Bell, where Sandland served as CEO of Empower Delivery and Grams held various positions, including global chief operating officer.

The new executives will work together to implement Niccol’s vision, with an emphasis on decreasing service times, making stores more welcoming, and simplifying the menu. Additionally, Arthur Valdez, the company’s chief supply officer, has announced his departure, effective in the coming weeks. A replacement for Valdez has already been identified.

The changes come as part of Starbucks’ efforts to turn around its business, following a fourth consecutive quarter of same-store sales declines. Despite this, the company’s fiscal first-quarter earnings and revenue topped analyst expectations. Niccol’s comments highlighted the need for a new operating model, with clear ownership and accountability, and a scope for each role.
