Aaron Glenn Hired as New York Jets Head Coach
Aaron Glenn, a former first-round draft pick for the New York Jets, has been hired as the team’s new head coach. Glenn, who played for the Jets from 1994 to 2001, said he had no doubts about where he wanted to go once the head-coaching job became available. “I wanted this job,” Glenn said during his introductory news conference. “I interviewed for a number of them, but I wanted this job.”
Glenn joins a growing list of NFL coaches who have returned to the team they once played for. He is one of five coaches who have played for the team they are now leading, along with Mike Vrabel of the New England Patriots, Dan Campbell of the Detroit Lions, DeMeco Ryans of the Houston Texans, and Jim Harbaugh of the Los Angeles Chargers.
Glenn’s coaching path includes stints as a personnel scout for the Jets, assistant defensive backs coach for the Browns, and defensive backs coach for the Saints. He was most recently the defensive coordinator for the Lions.
Vrabel, who was also a highly sought-after candidate, said he had a similar feeling when he returned to the Patriots. “In the end, it was clear to me and my family and my soul that this is the place I wanted to be,” Vrabel said.
The NFL has a total of five coaches who have played for the team they are now leading, with Campbell, Ryans, and Harbaugh joining Glenn and Vrabel.
