OpenAI Unveils ChatGPT Gov, a New AI Platform for U.S. Government Use
OpenAI, a Microsoft-backed company, has announced its biggest product launch since its enterprise rollout, introducing ChatGPT Gov, a new AI platform specifically designed for U.S. government use. The platform is built on top of ChatGPT Enterprise and offers enhanced security features, allowing government agencies to feed sensitive information into OpenAI’s models while operating within their own secure hosting environments.
ChatGPT Gov is designed to meet the unique needs of government agencies, providing a secure and compliant way to use AI for tasks such as document translation, summarization, code generation, and application building. The platform is built on Microsoft Azure commercial cloud and Azure Government community cloud, giving agencies control over their own security, privacy, and compliance requirements.
Since the beginning of 2024, over 90,000 government employees have used ChatGPT Enterprise to generate over 18 million prompts, demonstrating the potential of AI in government agencies. OpenAI has acknowledged the special considerations for government use of AI, including data privacy concerns and potential biases.
ChatGPT Gov is currently undergoing the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) and has not yet been accredited for use on non-public data. However, OpenAI expects the platform to be available in the near future, with customers potentially testing and using the product live within a month.
The company has also emphasized the importance of the U.S. winning the AI race, citing the competitive nature of the industry and the need to stay ahead of global competitors such as China’s DeepSeek. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly expressed admiration for President Donald Trump and has joined other tech CEOs in donating to his inauguration fund.
