Adam Vinatieri, a former NFL kicker who won Super Bowls with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots and Peyton Manning, believes Patrick Mahomes is making a strong case for being considered the greatest NFL player of all time.
Vinatieri was asked if Mahomes is close to surpassing Brady, who won six Super Bowls with the Patriots and another with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Vinatieri noted that there’s an “argument” for Mahomes being the best, comparing him to elite players like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
“I’ve always said, Tom’s got seven Super Bowls, until someone does something that he hasn’t, he’s still the man. But we’re getting to something even Tom, even the great Tom Brady, and Bill Belichick, and that team has not done. If they can pull it off, I dare say you got an argument. You definitely have an argument,” Vinatieri said.
Vinatieri also praised Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs organization for their ability to overcome challenges and remain competitive, crediting them with dealing with injuries and free agency to make a strong run at the Super Bowl.
“We’re getting to something even Tom, even the great Tom Brady, and Bill Belichick, and that team has not done. If they can pull it off, I dare say you got an argument. You definitely have an argument. And people will say, ‘Oh, you know, Joe Montana, this or that,’ and I don’t think we could ever agree on who is the best ever, but Patrick is right there, and that whole team,” Vinatieri said.
Mahomes’ ability to pull off impressive plays is also credited with the team’s success, according to Vinatieri, who noted that the Chiefs could become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
“When you have a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes that can pull magic out of a hat over and over and over again, it blows me away. And the fact that they’re doing it with all the adversity, the injuries, the free agency, Andy Reid and the organization, man, it’s super impressive no matter who’s looking through the hourglass at that,” Vinatieri said.
