A shooting at a supermarket in southern Indiana left three people dead and two police officers injured on Wednesday, authorities said.
The shooting occurred in Richmond, Indiana, at 11:04 a.m. local time, according to police dispatch records. Police received a report of a man with a gun at the Biggie’s Discount Food Market and arrived to find the suspect, a 39-year-old male, shooting inside the store.
Police officers, who were initially responding to a report of a suspicious person, confronted the suspect and a shootout ensued, authorities said. Two of the officers were struck by gunfire, one in the leg and one in the torso, and were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
The suspect was also injured and taken into custody. Three people, two males and one female, were found dead at the scene, authorities said.
The motive for the shooting is not yet known and the investigation is ongoing, said Richmond Police Chief Jim Branum at a news conference. “We’re just trying to piece together what happened,” he said. “We’re still looking for a motive. We haven’t found one yet.”
The suspect was identified as Robert W. Sanders, a Richmond resident. No charges have been filed yet as the investigation is still ongoing.
