“I think they’re both capable quarterbacks, and my preference would be to sign one of them,” said team owner Art Rooney. “So that’ll be the priority, and I think that will give us the best opportunity to move forward.”
Rooney values stability at the position, even if it means giving up on the prospect of a long-term answer. With the team’s need for a quarterback, it’s more likely that Pickett, who is 11 years younger than Rudolph, will be given the nod.
However, Rooney left open the possibility of both players returning, citing their ability to shine in certain moments throughout the season. The team’s ultimate decision will depend on various factors, including age and the desire to find a developmental option in the offseason.
The Steelers’ priority is to find a solution that provides stability and allows the team to move forward. With the weight of their playoff drought, it’s likely that Pickett will be given the opportunity to lead the team in 2025. And, if he doesn’t work out, the team may look elsewhere for a solution.
