Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed the “Screaming Eagles,” arrived at the southern border on Saturday to support President Trump’s effort to crack down on illegal immigration into the United States. The move is part of a broader effort to secure the border, with the military deploying up to 10,000 troops to the region.
Despite being one of the most recognizable units in the US military, the 101st Airborne Division made their mark on history during World War II. Soldiers from the unit will be working closely with federal agencies responsible for policing the border, including Customs and Border Protection.
In addition to soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division, military police and engineers from at least eight states are being sent to the border this week. Further, soldiers from the 82nd Airborne and 10th Mountain Divisions may also be deployed to the US-Mexico frontier, according to sources.
The latest troop deployment comes as targeted arrests of hundreds of illegal immigrants with criminal records began in sanctuary cities around the country on Tuesday. The Department of Justice has also vowed to crack down on any sanctuary jurisdiction that interferes with immigration enforcement.
