U.S. Capitol building Sees Stormy Sky on July 22, 2024
House Speaker Mike Johnson has invited President Donald Trump to deliver an address to Congress in March, marking Trump’s first joint address to Congress of his second term. In a letter, Johnson asked Trump to speak to both chambers of Congress on March 4 to share his “America First” vision for the country’s legislative future.
Johnson called Trump’s leadership and actions “strong” and “bold” and praised the country for experiencing a resurgence of patriotism, unity, and hope for the future. The White House has not yet responded to a request for comment.
Trump has previously addressed joint sessions of Congress four times, including three State of the Union addresses and one address in the early days of his first term. His most recent address was in February 2020, just before the COVID-19 pandemic ground the country to a halt. That speech was marked by Trump’s criticism of his opponents and the awarding of the Presidential Medal of Freedom to conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.
