Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander General Wesley Clark (Ret.) spoke with CNN’s Jessica Dean about the challenges he believes Pete Hegseth, the newly confirmed Secretary of Defense, will face in his new role.

Clark highlighted the complexity of the global security landscape, citing the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Syria, the threat of terrorism, and the growing competition between nations. “It’s a very challenging time for the Department of Defense,” he said. “The threats are multifaceted, and they’re changing rapidly.”

Clark also emphasized the importance of building strong relationships with international partners, including NATO allies. “You have to be able to work with other countries, to coordinate your efforts, and to make sure that you’re all speaking the same language,” he explained.

Furthermore, Clark warned that Hegseth will need to navigate the delicate balance between diplomacy and military might. “You have to be able to use your military power wisely, but you also have to be able to use diplomacy to prevent conflict and to build coalitions,” he said.

Clark also noted that Hegseth will face challenges within the Pentagon itself, including managing the massive budget and overseeing the largest military force in the world. “It’s a huge bureaucracy, and you have to be able to navigate that bureaucracy effectively,” he said.

In conclusion, Clark urged Hegseth to prioritize strategic thinking, strong relationships, and effective communication. “You have to be able to think strategically, to build relationships, and to communicate effectively with your people and with the world,” he said.
