Zach Ertz’s Uncertain Future Turned into a Career Renaissance
When Zach Ertz’s knee surgery rehabilitation was complete in 2023, he found himself wondering if he was still the same player. The thought lingered for months, until he joined the Washington Commanders and reinvigorated his love for football. Now, he’s just one step away from playing for another championship.
Ertz, 34, has been a valuable member of the Commanders’ high-scoring offense, and he’ll face his former team, the Philadelphia Eagles, in the NFC title game. Despite being a year removed from knee surgery and a year without a contract, Ertz has shown he’s still capable of making plays.
“I’m not going out there with a chip on my shoulder or trying to prove to people X, Y or Z,” Ertz said. “I’m just trying to go out there and be the best version of myself.”
Ertz’s chemistry with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels has been a key factor in his resurgence. Daniels targeted Ertz more than any other receiver this season, and the two have connected seven times for 51 yards and one score in the playoffs.
“He’s seen a lot of football in this league, so it’s been nice just to be able to lean on him in certain situations and kind of pick his brain,” Daniels said.
Ertz’s experience and dependability have been crucial for the Commanders, who are looking to make their first Super Bowl appearance in 33 years. He’s been a safety valve for Daniels, making big plays in critical situations.
“I had known red zone and third downs and two-minute [drills] would be a factor,” Commanders coach Dan Quinn said. “And he’s surpassed those and kept going.”
Ertz’s journey back to the NFL was uncertain, but he’s found a new lease on life with the Commanders. He’s grateful for the opportunity to fall back in love with the game and be around people who know how to use him.
“It’s exceeded all my expectations,” Ertz said.
