[A woman has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a US Border Patrol agent in Vermont. Teresa Youngblut, 21, was charged with assault on a federal law enforcement officer for allegedly firing a handgun at Border Patrol Agent David Maland during a traffic stop. Maland, 44, died from his injuries later that day. Youngblut, a resident of Washington state, was injured in the shooting and is currently being treated at a medical center.
According to court documents, the shooting occurred during an immigration inspection when Maland and other border patrol agents stopped a blue Toyota Prius with North Carolina plates, which was registered to a passenger identified as Felix Baukholt, a German national with an expired US visa. The driver, Youngblut, allegedly fired at an agent, prompting Maland to return fire.
Youngblut and Baukholt had been under surveillance since January 14 after a concerned hotel employee reported that they appeared to be wearing tactical clothing and equipment. In the hours leading up to the shooting, agents followed the pair to a local Walmart, where they purchased supplies, including aluminum foil, and appeared to wrap unknown objects. Agents later found a cache of firearms, ammunition, and electronic devices in their vehicle, along with military-grade gear, including night-vision goggles and a ballistic helmet. An apparent journal belonging to Youngblut was also discovered during the search, along with various documents containing personal and travel information.
