Title: A Thought-Provoking Drama: “By Design” Explores the Human Experience
Directed by Amanda Kramer, “By Design” is a dynamic and thought-provoking drama that explores the human experience through the eyes of unloved and ignored characters. The film delves into the theme of loneliness, as the characters attempt to be seen and heard in a world that would rather they be a sounding board.
At the center of the film is Camille, played by Juliette Lewis, a character who struggles to feel seen and heard. Her life is filled with shallow friendships and a mother who dominates the conversation, leaving Camille feeling unseen. When Camille discovers a designer chair she can’t afford, she’s drawn to it, not just for its beauty, but for its ability to make her feel seen.
The film’s dialogue is stilted, but it’s a deliberate choice that pays off, allowing the audience to get to know the characters and their struggles. The performances by Lewis and Mamoudou Athie are excellent, moving, and deep, and at times, aloof and heartbreakingly complex.
While “By Design” may not be for everyone, it’s a film that dares to be different, and its thought-provoking themes and performances make it a standout. The film premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival on January 23 and runs for 92 minutes.
