Detroit Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown and his teammates will be entering the 2025 season without two important coordinators who played a crucial role in their success. Ben Johnson, the former offensive coordinator, has left to become the head coach of the Chicago Bears, while Aaron Glenn has become the head coach of the New York Jets.
St. Brown, who was closely associated with Johnson, expressed his thoughts on his former coordinator’s departure on his podcast with his brother Equanimeous. He said he reached out to Johnson after he signed his deal to join the Bears and the tone was set for their ongoing rivalry. “I told him, ‘Two times a year, Ben, we’re going to f— you up,'” St. Brown said, chuckling.
Johnson responded in kind, saying, “I’m going to f— you up.” The exchange reflects a mutual respect, with the two engaging in playful banter. St. Brown joked that he knew all of Johnson’s play-calling tendencies and plans to use that knowledge to his advantage. The Lions will now face off against their former coordinator twice a year, a situation that will require a shift in their dynamic.
The Lions were expected to return to the NFC title game in 2025 after their impressive 2024 season, but were eliminated in the divisional round by the Washington Commanders. Despite this, St. Brown and his teammates have already set their sights on dealing with their old collaborator. Johnson is tasked with guiding the Bears, who have the 2024 No. 1 overall pick, Caleb Williams, and other talented players like D.J. Moore and Keenan Allen. St. Brown has expressed admiration for Williams, a nod to their shared USC connection, but the Bears took a beating from the Lions in 2024.
