Wolf Man Director Reveals How Much Werewolf Lore to Expect
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Wolf Man director Leigh Whannell discussed the approach he took to explaining werewolf lore in the upcoming horror movie. Whannell compared his approach to that of surrealist filmmaker David Lynch, stating that he didn’t want to spoon-feed audiences with a “library montage” where all the answers are revealed. Instead, Whannell opted for a more subtle approach, hinting at the rules of the werewolf lore without fully explaining them.
“We didn’t want that scene where they discover a dusty book in the basement like, ‘Here’s the rules,'” Whannell said. “Exposition is such a tricky thing to handle, and how much you want to explain to people. A lot of times you might do a test screening and people tell you they want more, but my personal preference is to keep things more mysterious.”
Whannell’s approach means that the film will focus on the emotional pain and struggle of the characters as they face the terror of the werewolf, without delving too deeply into the science behind it. The director aims to create a sense of mystery and intrigue, leaving audiences to piece together the clues themselves.
The film’s storyline follows Blake, a father and husband, as he transforms into a werewolf after a family trip to his childhood home goes awry. His wife, Charlotte, and daughter, Ginger, must try to escape the farmhouse as Blake’s transformation progresses. The movie’s trailers have shown glimpses of Blake’s gruesome transformation, hinting at the terrifying events that will unfold.
Wolf Man arrives in theaters on January 17, 2025.
