The suspect served in the U.S. Army and had a lucrative job with a major consulting firm, indicating that even outwardly successful individuals can be tempted by extremist narratives.
FBI Director Christopher Wray warned in a statement that Jabbar’s attack “appears to have been inspired by ISIS… and it’s the most challenging type of terrorist threat we face.” Wray emphasized that radicals can be self-radicalizing in a short period, as Jabbar seemed to have within weeks, creating a daunting threat for law enforcement.
The event took place just three days after Islamic State (ISIS) propagandists urged online supporters to take action, boasting that the once-defeated extremist group remains highly active. It is unclear at this time what connection Jabbar had to other ISIS operatives.
