In the occupied West Bank, a group of Palestinian farmers in the village of Bardala are receiving eviction notices from the Israeli Defense Forces, stating that they must vacate their land by December 4 or lose everything. Khalid Sawafta, a 60-year-old farmer, has already been evicted once, and is now facing demolition of his sheep sheds after 100 years of farming the land.

According to the United Nations, similar evictions are common in the West Bank, and in the past year alone, 227 Palestinian families have been evicted. The Israeli government has authorized over 8,600 new housing units for Israelis in the West Bank and increased funding for settler projects.

Since Hamas’ attacks on Israel last October, settler leaders have been pushing for the annexation of the whole West Bank. If Donald Trump’s pick for US ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, is approved, it could accelerate Palestinians’ land losses. During a visit to Israel, Huckabee stated that there is no such thing as the West Bank, only Judea and Samaria, and that there is no occupation.

Israeli settler leader Yishai Fleisher believes that Huckabee can do more than Trump’s last ambassador, David Friedman, who helped convince the then-president to declare Jerusalem Israel’s capital. Evangelical Christian Huckabee is well-liked by millions of Bible-believing Americans.

However, Alon Pinkas, an Israeli diplomat and former adviser to the last Israeli prime minister, believes that settlers are misguided and that Trump won’t sacrifice his interests in the broader region. Pinkas thinks Trump wants to normalize Israel’s relations with Arab countries, and that Mike Huckabee will not be making the decisions.

Israel’s finance minister, Belazel Smotrich, believes that the West Bank will soon be part of his country, and that Israel will achieve sovereignty in the region. Back in Bardala, local council leader Ibrahim Sawafta claims that the Israeli goal is to displace residents from the region, not to build a security fence.

The hard reality for Palestinians in Bardala, and elsewhere in the West Bank, is that their state has become a distant dream.
