Four Indigenous people, including a four-year-old child, were shot during an attack in southern Brazil late on Friday. The victims, who were members of the Avá Guarani people, were targeted in the region of Guaira, in the southern Parana state. According to the Missionary Council for Indigenous Peoples (CIMI), an organization linked to the Catholic Bishops Conference of Brazil, the attackers opened fire on the Indigenous community, injuring four people.

The injured include a four-year-old child who was shot in the leg, as well as two other people, one hit in the leg and the other in the back. A fourth person, shot in the jaw, was sent to a hospital in Cascavel, one of the largest cities in the state.

The attack is the latest in a series of assaults against the Avá Guarani people, who have been the target of violence since December 29. Two members of the community were injured in the days leading up to the New Year, including one who was shot in the arm.

Federal police have launched an investigation into the attack, with federal, state, and municipal security forces deployed to the region to prevent further violence. The Ministry of Indigenous Affairs has condemned the attacks and is working with the Ministry of Justice and Public Security to investigate armed groups operating in the region.
