House GOP leaders prepareTrump’s legislative agenda

[Donald Trump and his GOP allies in Congress have shared their ambitious agenda for the first 100 days of his term, which includes tax cuts, border security, and raising the debt limit. They plan to accomplish this with a single bill, which they hope to pass using the budget process known as reconciliation. However, this will be a challenging task, given the slim GOP majority in both the House and Senate.

Speaker Mike Johnson has emphasized that President Trump prefers a single bill that covers all the measures, citing the benefits of having more time to negotiate and get it right. However, other lawmakers have warned that this approach could be difficult, especially with the limited time frame and the need for bipartisan support.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune has suggested that the plan is to put forward two separate reconciliation packages, but this would be an extremely difficult task given the small margins in both chambers. Trump’s allies in Congress are also looking to pass a bill that includes a “once-in-a-generation investment in border security and immigration enforcement,” which Thune believes could be passed through regular order with support from Democrats.

Despite the challenges, the goal is to have the bill on Trump’s desk by the end of April. However, many senators have argued that starting with a border bill packed with popular GOP ideas is a better approach than risking a lengthy tax battle. Republican House Ways and Means Committee Chair Jason Smith has warned that a comprehensive reconciliation bill is necessary to address expiring tax provisions, energy, border, immigration, and spending cuts.

Johnson has acknowledged that the path ahead will be complex and time-consuming, but expressed confidence that the party can work together to achieve their goals. Trump’s endorsement was a key factor in Johnson’s successful bid to retain the speaker’s gavel, and key Republicans have been meeting to clear the air and chart a path forward.
