Hollywood’s 2025 Awards Season Kicks Off with Golden Globes Ceremony

The 2025 Golden Globes ceremony will kick off the film industry’s awards season on Sunday, with films such as “Wicked,” “The Brutalist,” and “Emilia Perez” competing for top honors. The ceremony will be hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, who has set aside some boundaries to ensure a more positive tone and avoid roasting the A-list crowd.

The nominees for acting honors include Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and Angelina Jolie, among others. The show will be broadcast live on CBS and stream on Paramount+.

The Golden Globes have a reputation for being more relaxed than the Oscars, with past hosts, including Ricky Gervais, delivering jokes that skewered the A-list crowd and Globes voters. However, Glaser has promised to set a new tone, saying, “This is not a roast. This is a night to celebrate stuff, so I want to set a good tone and I want people who were nominated to feel proud of themselves. I don’t want them to feel under attack.”

The movie nominees are led by Spanish-language musical “Emilia Perez” and post-World War Two epic “The Brutalist,” which stars Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who flees to the United States to chase the American dream. The 3-1/2 hour film is considered a frontrunner for the night’s top prize, best film drama.

Winning a Golden Globe can increase a film’s chances of success in the run-up to the Academy Awards in March. According to Scott Feinberg, executive editor for awards at The Hollywood Reporter, “If a movie or actor takes home a Globe, it increases the likelihood a member of the film academy will check out that project.”

The winners of the Globes are chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, compared to roughly 9,000 voters who select the Academy Awards. This year’s nominees in the musical or comedy category include “Wicked,” “Anora,” and “The Substance,” making it difficult to predict a clear winner.
