Law enforcement agencies work to investigate New Year’s Day car-ramming attack in New Orleans
At least ten people were killed and many more injured when a person allegedly drove into a crowd in the early hours of New Year’s Day on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. The suspect, 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. national and Army veteran, was killed in a subsequent gunfight with police.
The FBI is investigating whether there is a connection between the New Orleans car-ramming attack and a separate incident in which a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside a Las Vegas hotel on the same day. Two law enforcement sources familiar with the cases said they are looking into a possible military connection between the two suspects.
The investigation also turned up a possible link between both incidents, with the FBI searching a site in Texas after a man drove a pick-up truck flying an ISIS flag into New Orleans’ busy Bourbon Street, killing 15 people and injuring at least 30 others. The FBI is investigating the incident as a terrorist act.
The perpetrator of the Las Vegas incident, who has not been publicly identified, also had previous military experience, according to law enforcement sources.
Both vehicles in the incidents were rented from the same company, Turo, and authorities are investigating whether there is a link on that front. The company said it is partnering with law enforcement to investigate both incidents.
The New Orleans Mayor, LaToya Cantrell, said that the bollards intended to keep pedestrians safe were not in place because they were still under construction. The project was almost complete, with completion expected before the Super Bowl in February.
The FBI is working with local authorities to investigate the motive and detail of the attacks, with Attorney General Murrill saying that investigators suspect that the attack was planned and employed explosive devices, which may have been made in an Airbnb in the city rented by those involved.
