Here is the article:
New England Patriots fans have been heard chanting “Fire Mayo” during Saturday night’s 40-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, as the team wraps up a disappointing first season under head coach Jerod Mayo.
The Patriots’ 3-13 record is their worst since 1992, and they could finish with as few as three wins for the first time since that season. The team was 4-13 last season under former coach Bill Belichick, whom Mayo replaced in January.
When asked about the chants, Mayo said, “You hear those things. But at the same time, they paid to sit in the seats, and we’ve got to play better. If we play better, we don’t have to hear that stuff.”
The team’s struggling offense, led by rookie quarterback Drake Maye, has been a major topic of scrutiny. The Patriots are 30th in the league in points scored and 31st in yards gained.
However, some players have come to the defense of Mayo, including defensive end Deatrich Wise Jr. and linebacker Davon Godchaux. Wise said, “The guy’s in his first season. It’s not going to be golden. We didn’t expect to win a Super Bowl this year. I get it, nobody wants to get beaten 40-7, but the chant is ridiculous.”
Godchaux added, “Everybody plays a part in this. It isn’t just Jerod Mayo. Players, coaches, front office. We just have to get better as a whole organization. I believe in this organization. We just had probably the best team in the NFL right now on the ropes last week [in Buffalo]. I don’t believe in all that other ridiculous stuff. The guy is in his first year. It’s just ridiculous.”
