Greenland Defense Spending Boosted Amid US Ownership Talks

The Danish government has announced a massive boost in defense spending for Greenland, amounting to a “double digit billion amount” in krone, or at least $1.5 billion (1.2 billion pounds). The announcement came just hours after US President-elect Donald Trump repeated his desire to purchase the Arctic territory.

Trump had stated that ownership and control of Greenland is an “absolute necessity” for the US. Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, is strategically important for the US, lying on the shortest route from North America to Europe. It has major mineral reserves and is home to a large US space facility.

The new defense package includes funding for two new inspection ships, two new long-range drones, and two extra dog sled teams. Additionally, it will provide for increased staffing at Arctic Command in Nuuk and an upgrade for one of Greenland’s three main civilian airports to handle F-35 supersonic fighter aircraft.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede responded to Trump’s comments, saying “we are not for sale,” but added that Greenlanders should remain open to cooperation and trade with their neighbors. Analysts note that the plan has been under discussion for some time and should not be seen as a direct response to Trump’s comments.

The move has been seen by some as an attempt by Denmark to boost its military capabilities in the Arctic amid growing concerns about encroachment by China and Russia. A Danish Defense Academy analyst suggested that Trump’s comments may have prompted Denmark to accelerate its plans.
