The CEO of a Chinese conglomerate, Wu Mong Qing, has waived his right to extradition, clearing the way for him to be flown to New York to face charges in the murder of his ex-wife.
Mong, 55, had been fighting extradition from Hong Kong for months, but ultimately decided to give up his fight and agree to be taken back to the United States.
He is accused of stabbing his 42-year-old ex-wife, Wang Yue, to death in 2018 during a bitter divorce battle. Wang was found dead in her apartment in the Upper East Side, with Mong being the prime suspect.
Mong had been fighting extradition, with his lawyers arguing that he should not be sent back to the United States and that the requested extradition was illegal. However, U.S. authorities were able to convince Hong Kong authorities that the procedures for extradition were valid.
Mong is expected to be flown to New York in the coming days to face charges of murder in the second degree. His extradition is seen as a major victory for U.S. authorities, who have been working for years to bring him to justice.
It is not clear what will happen to Mong if he is convicted of the crime, but he faces a potential life sentence.
