President-Elect Trump Advocates for Eliminating Debt Ceiling
President-elect Donald Trump has called for the elimination of the debt ceiling, stating that it is a “meaningless concept” and that no one knows what would happen if it were to be breached. In a phone interview with NBC News, Trump expressed his support for getting rid of the debt ceiling, saying that it would be the “smartest thing” Congress could do.
Trump suggested that the debt ceiling is only a psychological barrier and that it doesn’t have any real-world implications. He also expressed his willingness to lead the charge to eliminate the debt ceiling, saying that he would support it entirely if the Democrats wanted to get rid of it.
In addition to his views on the debt ceiling, Trump also weighed in on the possibility of a government shutdown, which is set to occur at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday if a funding deal is not reached. He suggested that the fight playing out in Congress is necessary to clear the decks before his administration begins in January.
Trump also expressed his lack of confidence in House Speaker Mike Johnson, stating that the short-term funding deal proposed by the Speaker was “unacceptable” and a “Democrat trap.” He also mentioned that he had discussed his views on the funding deal with Elon Musk, saying that they were in line and “very much on track.”
