EXCLUSIVE: GOP Critics of Speaker Mike Johnson Float Alternatives for House Leadership
House Republicans critical of how Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is handling government funding talks are already beginning to explore alternatives for the top House leadership spot, sources told Fox News Digital.
Mentioned as potential successors to Johnson were House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla.
Johnson’s office did not comment on the rumors, but a person close to Donalds told Fox News Digital that “at this time, the Congressman has not made any statements regarding the future of House leadership.” Emmer’s spokesperson stated, “Whip Emmer supports Speaker Johnson and is focused on doing the job he was elected to do.”
The possible challenge to Johnson’s leadership comes as some Republicans oppose the latest government funding deal, which was released by congressional leaders earlier this week. The deal, which would keep the government funded until March 14, includes unrelated policy riders that have frustrated many conservatives and House GOP hardliners.
Some Republicans have publicly signaled that Johnson could face a challenge on January 3, with one lawmakers stating, “The speaker definitely has some ‘no’ votes and some people considering their options.” Another Republican, Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., said that there would always be consequences for Johnson’s actions.
Johnson won the speakership after a three-week battle last year and has since received an endorsement from President-elect Trump, which has helped to reduce the level of backlash he faces.
Despite the challenges, Johnson has expressed confidence in his leadership and argued that Republicans are doing the best they can under difficult circumstances, promising that the party will be in a better position to handle federal funding when the current deal expires at the beginning of Trump’s term.
