A Colorado Man Claims to be a “Professional Drinker” After Causing a Three-Car Crash

A 34-year-old Denver resident, Matthew Kampmann, was arrested for driving under the influence, careless driving, and operating an uninsured vehicle after causing a three-car crash in a Denver suburb. The incident occurred on a Wednesday afternoon, when Kampmann, with a blood-alcohol content of 0.326 (more than four times the legal limit), allegedly plowed his 2000 Nissan Sentra into the rear of a Subaru, which then hit a third car.

According to the arrest report, Kampmann smelt of booze, had bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech, leading officers to suspect impaired driving. When questioned, he claimed to be a “professional drinker” and later a “professional alcoholic” while preparing to take a breath test. A search of his vehicle found an empty Jim Beam shooter in his pants pocket and numerous empty and full Jim Beam shooters and beer cans littered on the floor.

Kampmann claimed to have consumed 10 drinks before the crash. He was later released into the custody of his wife, who was a sober driver. This is not the first time someone has made a similar claim, as a Florida man, George Emmanuel, made a similar assertion in 2020 after being pulled over for speeding, with a BAC nearly triple the legal limit. Emmanuel was sentenced to 12 months probation, community service, and a mandatory attendance at DUI school.
