Mysterious Drones Spark Conspiracy Theories as Government Remains Tight-Lipped
Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has accused the government of withholding information about the mysterious drones that have been sighted over New Jersey and New York. Despite the FBI receiving thousands of reports from the public since the sightings began in November, a spokesperson for the bureau told Congress on Tuesday that "we don’t know" who is behind the drones.
Greene, who has been vocal about her suspicions, posted on social media that she does not believe the official communications from the government. "The government is in control of the drones and refuses to tell the American people what is going on. It really is that bad," she wrote.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Greene said the government was withholding information about the drones. "I’m gonna call it total bulls*** that no one knows what these are. And I think it’s a slap in the face to the American people to say they don’t know what this is," she said.
The FBI has established a national tip line and received around 5,000 reports, but has only generated less than 100 leads that are worthy of further investigation. The bureau has said that many of the sightings are likely misidentified manned aircraft.
Drone expert Vijay Kumar, a professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, has suggested that the evidence points toward a U.S. government operation, rather than a foreign state actor. Kumar said that even though the FBI claims it does not know who is behind the drones, it does not mean the U.S. government as a whole is not involved, given the drones’ proximity to airports and military bases.
Greene’s accusations have sparked conspiracy theories, with many calling for the government to be more transparent about the drones. The government has maintained that it does not know the origin of the drones, but Greene’s claims have added fuel to the fire.
