Colorado’s Travis Hunter Wins 2024 Heisman Trophy
Travis Hunter, a junior cornerback/wide receiver for the University of Colorado, has become the first two-way player to win the Heisman Trophy since Charles Woodson in 1997. Hunter received 2,231 points to take home the award, beating out fellow finalists Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, and Miami quarterback Cam Ward.
Hunter’s versatility on and off the field was a key factor in his winning the Heisman. He played 1,443 snaps this season, roughly split evenly between offense and defense, as well as special teams. He received first-team All-Big 12 honors as both a defensive back and a wide receiver, and was also named the conference’s 2024 Defensive Player of the Year.
In addition to his defensive accolades, Hunter was also a star on the offensive side of the ball. He ranked fifth in the FBS with 92 receptions for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns, and had three games with 10 or more catches and seven outings with 100 or more receiving yards. He also ran for a touchdown against Utah.
In his acceptance speech, Hunter credited his fiancée, mother, and head coach Deion Sanders for their support, saying, “I never thought I’d be in this position. It’s crazy. Your belief will take you a long way. It’s actually crazy, man. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Hunter plans to enter the 2025 NFL Draft, although he may also play in the Alamo Bowl on December 28 against BYU. With his unique ability to excel on both sides of the ball, Hunter’s future in the NFL looks bright.
