The FBI questioned the mother of Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, the night before his arrest in Pennsylvania. Kathleen Mangione, the mother, told FBI agents that her son bore a resemblance to the suspect wanted for the killing. The FBI received a tip from San Francisco Police four days prior, after a missing person’s report was filed by the Mangione family. The report said that San Francisco Police notified federal agents after recognizing the suspect’s face in surveillance images released by the New York City Police Department.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania and was found with fake IDs and a 3D-printed gun that matched the shell casings found at the crime scene. He is facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder, illegal weapons possession, and forgery.
Mangione’s mother reported him missing to San Francisco Police on November 18, stating that she had not spoken to her son since July 1 and was unaware of his whereabouts. Luigi Mangione is accused of shooting and killing Thompson, 50, outside the Hilton hotel in Manhattan on December 4.
The suspect has been fighting extradition to New York, but Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said that the alleged killer may waive his extradition next week.
