Gabbard Struggles to Woo Senators Ahead of Confirmation Fight

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s (D-HI) efforts to build support among senators for her nomination as United Nations ambassador have hit a snag, with several lawmakers expressing concerns about her record on foreign policy and her controversial past statements.

Gabbard, a combat veteran and Iraq War veteran, has been a vocal critic of the war in Syria and has expressed skepticism about the role of the United States in international affairs. However, her stance has also drawn criticism from some lawmakers who view her as being too soft on foreign policy.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), the ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has expressed concerns about Gabbard’s lack of experience in international diplomacy and her views on the Syrian civil war.

“I have concerns about her lack of experience in this area, and I have concerns about her views on the Syrian civil war, which I think are out of step with the values of the United States,” Menendez said.

Other lawmakers have also expressed concerns about Gabbard’s past statements, including her comments about the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, and her criticism of the United States’ role in the war.

Gabbard’s nomination has also drawn criticism from some progressive groups, who view her as being too hawkish on foreign policy.

Gabbard’s supporters, however, argue that she has a unique perspective on foreign policy and that her experience as a combat veteran gives her a valuable insight into the challenges faced by American troops.

Despite the challenges, Gabbard’s supporters are optimistic that she will ultimately be confirmed as the next UN ambassador.

“We believe that Rep. Gabbard has the skills and the experience to be a successful UN ambassador,” said a spokesperson for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. “We think that she will be a strong advocate for progressive values and will work to promote peace and stability around the world.”
