Bill Belichick, the eight-time Super Bowl champion, took his first-ever college coaching job with the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, officially introducing him as the new head coach on Thursday. Despite initial skepticism about his interest in the job, Belichick was heavily invested in the position, having spoken with several of the school’s most famous alumni, including Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor, and Julius Peppers.

Belichick, 72, said he spoke with Jordan, Taylor, and Peppers, who all offered their support. He declined to reveal the specifics of their conversations, but stated that they were “very supportive.” He also praised the school’s brand and support system, saying he’s excited to spend more time with the team.

Belichick signed a five-year deal with the Tar Heels and made it clear that he has no intention of leaving the school anytime soon, stating, “I did not come here to leave.” The coach, who has spent nearly five decades on NFL sidelines, also interviewed for at least two NFL jobs last offseason after parting ways with the New England Patriots after 24 seasons and six championships.
