Steven Spielberg’s Next Movie: A Reunion with Old Friend and a Return to Classic Tone
According to screenwriter David Koepp, the legendary filmmaker’s next project is a sci-fi movie that will reunite him with Koepp, who has worked with Spielberg on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds, and Jurassic Park. The new movie is expected to hit theaters in 2026 and features an impressive cast, including Emily Blunt, Colin Firth, Wyatt Russell, Josh O’Connor, and Colman Domingo.
In a recent interview, Koepp confirmed that the film is a sci-fi and will have a different tone reminiscent of Spielberg’s earlier work. When asked about the project, Koepp said, “Yes, it does harken back to maybe a different tone than what he’s done lately. Something he used to do that he hasn’t done for a little bit.”
Spielberg’s upcoming movie marks a return to the sci-fi genre, a departure from his recent work. The last time he tackled a standalone sci-fi film was with War of the Worlds in 2005. The new project is expected to be a departure from Ready Player One, which received a mixed response from critics and audiences.
Koepp’s comments suggest that the new movie will have a tone reminiscent of Spielberg’s earlier sci-fi classics, such as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and A.I. Artificial Intelligence. With a stacked cast and a return to the tone of his earlier work, the movie is shaping up to be a major win.
