I didn’t seek out the idea of coaching in college, but it came to me this year. I’ve had a couple dozen coaches come to talk to me about the salary cap in pro football and how it compares to college football. They wanted to know how I made decisions and used the available resources. As I learned more, I became more aware of the differences between the two levels and the common threads that tie them together.
At 72, I’m the oldest coach in college football, but I’m not interested in leaving. My goal is to elevate the University of North Carolina to new heights. I’m proud of my ties to the school and all it stands for – its academics, culture, and research.
In fact, my first words as a Tar Heels coach were the same as they were when I was a Tar Heels fan: “Beat Duke!” It’s full circle for me.
