UNKNOWN “FLU-LIKE” DISEASE KILLS 143 IN CONGO
A mysterious “flu-like” disease has struck the Democratic Republic of the Congo, claiming 143 lives within a two-week period. The disease, which is mostly affecting women and children, is causing severe symptoms including high fever and severe headaches.
The World Health Organisation has launched an urgent probe into the crisis, working alongside the DRC’s public health ministry to identify the disease. Medical teams have been sent to collect samples and conduct tests, but so far, no data has been released on the number of patients infected or hospitalised.
The situation is being described as “extremely worrying” by local officials, with the lack of treatment and medical supplies in rural areas exacerbating the crisis. The disease is reportedly causing panic, with patients dying in their own homes due to the lack of medical attention.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has recently experienced another deadly outbreak, with an ultra-deadly strain of mpox declared a global public health emergency by the WHO. This outbreak has already killed at least 500 people and infected 13,700 in several African countries.
The health authorities are scrambling to contain the spread of the disease, with a shortage of medicines in rural areas further complicating the situation. The World Health Organisation has also been working to contain the outbreak of mpox, a highly contagious disease that has a high fatality rate.
