The Super Bowl MVP award should be renamed the Brady Trophy.

Bill Belichick Weighs in on the Debate: Players Win Games, Not Coaches

In a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s “Let’s Go” podcast, Bill Belichick reiterated his long-held belief that players are the ones who ultimately win games and championships. The former New England Patriots coach emphasized that without great players, coaches are simply “whistle-jockeys” who can’t win without them.

Belichick pointed to his own experiences with legendary players like Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks, and Tom Brady, stating that it’s impossible to win without good players. He recalled the Giants and Patriots teams he coached, saying that players like Brady, Willie McGinest, Mike Vrabel, and others were the ones who won the games, not him.

Co-host Jim Gray joked that the trophy should be named the Brady Trophy, to which Belichick quipped, “He won seven of them.” While Belichick is correct that players ultimately win games, he also acknowledged that the greatest coaches are the ones who consistently give their players an edge.

The debate between Belichick and Tom Brady is ongoing, with Belichick publicly siding with his former quarterback. However, the truth lies in the middle: players and coaches are both essential components of a successful team. The marriage between the two is what creates a dynasty, regardless of what the trophy is called.
